About the event

It’s that time of year – Crane Count is upon us.


Please join us for one of the longest running citizen science projects in Australia, now in its 29th year. This year its being held on Saturday, 29 August.


We are looking for volunteers to help carry out a synchronised count of Sarus Crane and Brolga across all the major roosting sites on the Atherton Tablelands. There are two parts to the annual count and its spread over two days.


The first part is a driven set of transects between Mareeba and Ravenshoe covering all the major known areas that Cranes congregate on cropping fields in the day. This gives us an indication of where they are and the numbers as well as hopefully what they have been feeding on.


The second part is the evening roost count starting around 4:30 pm and carrying on till dusk. Here we attempt to…
