Glossy Black-Cockatoos – The Old Acid Test


The Glossy Black-Cockatoo is a specialist bird that feeds almost exclusively on sheoak kernels. The Endangered Kangaroo Island subspecies has benefited from three decades of recover efforts, but both it and the now Vulnerable south-eastern subspecies lost vast areas of habitat in the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires. Little is known about the northern subspecies; even whether it is a separate subspecies is disputed. Recovery of the species will depend on knowledge of where the species nests and which stands of casuarina are essential for its survival. Gay's recent work has shown that the cockatoos prefer trees growing on acid soils formed on ancient rocks. This work can be used to identify the casuarina stands that are a priority for protection for the Glossy's recovery.



The Glossy Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami) occurs across eastern Australia, as well as on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Adult males and females…
