The 2026 Cairns Birding Festival opened on Friday, 28 August with a fascinating presentation by Denis Moeser exploring the successes, surprises, and discoveries emerging from his long-running nest box project at Cattana Wetlands.
Through years of dedicated monitoring and observation, Denis has documented how native wildlife is making use of artificial nesting habitat at the wetlands. His work provides an intriguing window into which species take up residence, how they use the boxes, and the potential role nest boxes can play in supplementing natural nesting hollows.
During the presentation, Denis shared some of the project’s most interesting findings and unexpected occupants, along with practical lessons learned from establishing, maintaining, and monitoring nest boxes in the Wet Tropics.
